Loft spaces also get very hot in summer. Starting in September means finishing in November or December, which isn’t the most glamorous time frame for completion. But if you care more about getting the best value and the most choice of specialists than finishing in summer then autumn is worth serious thought.

Having the room insulated and finished just before winter has its advantages too. A well insulated loft room is warm and cosy and coming into the coldest months with a brand new space to use is not a bad situation to be in.

Winter: It’s Not As Bad As You Think

Winter has a reputation for being a bad time to build and it is partly deserved as working hours are limited by the shorter days, some materials are not suitable for use in very cold weather and the Christmas and New Year period means building work is effectively on hold for two to three weeks.

But if timing is flexible for a homeowner, there are some definite advantages to winter outside of the December and first week of January.

Builder availability is highest in winter. Waiting times which in summer can extend to several months can be reduced to a matter of weeks in November or January. If you have been struggling to get quotes, winter season is often when the conversion specialists that you really want to work with have space in their diary.

Also prices sometimes can be slightly negotiable in winter . Some builders won’t budge on price no matter the season but some will and winter is the time to have that conversation.

Another thing to remember again is that a loft conversion is mostly an internal project. The roofing and structural phase at the beginning requires reasonable weather but once the roof is made watertight the rest of the build continues inside regardless. In the initial phase of the project, a professional team handles the weather risks and the rest of the project remains unaffected.

If you start in November you are finishing in January or February. Not the most exciting timeline but you’ll be ready for the room well before spring and paid less and waited less to get there.

The Real Answer: The Best Time is When You Are Ready

It is not just about the season but it certainly does makes a difference to how your loft conversion job goes. The most important things are to choose the right type of conversion for your property, to get at least three quotes from vetted specialists and to make sure you have a realistic budget including the contingency costs that always come up.
